Lighting, quiet, mattress, blackout curtains — the quick checklist that tells you what a room will actually feel like.
You can read every review and still miss what a room will actually feel like. The best indicator isn't thread count or minibar — it's a handful of specific, checkable details. Here's the shortlist we apply ourselves, before we book or configure a room.
Light quality, not light quantity
Check whether the room has layered lighting — bedside, desk, ambient — that can be adjusted independently. A single overhead source feels institutional, no matter how the furniture is priced. If the photos show only a ceiling light, expect that in person.
- [ ] Layered, dimmable lighting rather than a single overhead fixture
Sound as a luxury
Acoustic isolation is underrated. A room that feels quiet — whether from double glazing, solid construction, or carpet — communicates care in a way that no interior design decision can override. The most luxurious hotel room you've ever stayed in probably had very little echo.
- [ ] Evidence of real noise isolation: glazing, carpet, solid walls
"Guests rarely mention what made them sleep well. But they always mention if something kept them awake."
— Dine BOURAIMA, Managing Director
Mattress and blackout curtain
Two things that cost relatively little at scale and produce outsized satisfaction: a mattress that offers genuine support (not just softness), and blackout curtains that actually block light completely — including the strip at the bottom. Both solve problems guests have at home. Solving them at a hotel is memorable.
- [ ] Supportive mattress, not just soft
- [ ] True blackout curtain, sealed edge to edge
The house-rules scan
Check-in and checkout times matter more than they look on paper. At Benin Royal Hotel, check-in runs from 3:00 PM and checkout is at 12:00 PM — a policy a real property can actually honour beats an "early" one from a cheaper alternative. Our room listings go room by room, including house rules and what's included. Rates start at 74,000 FCFA per night, from the Privilege Room up to the Royal Suite.
Run this checklist twice — once on the listing, once when you arrive. If it passes both times, you've found your room. Reserve it and sleep on it.
